ì°çÈ÷Ê/Lee, Yung Taik
Abstract
(1) The author has tried to trace when and via which route syphilis was transmitted into Korea, treating of materials obtained mainly from Yoo Byun¢¥s Sok-Eui-Sul (Medical Theories, Continuation) Lee Si Jin¢¥s Bon-Cho-Kang-Mok (Botanical List), Lee Soo Kwang¢¥s Ji-Bong-Yoo-Sul (Ji-Bong Classified Theories) and Wang-jo-Sil-Rok (Actual Record of Lee Dynasty).
(2) Syphilis is concluded to be first transmitted into Korea in around 1515, 20 years after its first appearance in Europe in 1495^-1496. This makes one surprised to know how fast the spread due to human instinctt was, taking the inconvenience of traffic at that time into consideration.
(3) Syphilis was transmitted from China into Korea overland by the members of the goodwill mission between these two countries.
(4) Syphilis which had been first transmittted into Korea in around 1515 was fairly spread by 1532, widely spread by 1560, and during the lm-Jin-Woe-Ran (Japan¢¥s Invasion in Korea in the year of Im-Jin) beginning in 1592 it reached utmost prevalence to pass into the modern era.
